American Airlines has announced plans to **reconnect air service between the United States and Venezuela, becoming the first U.S. carrier to publicly commit to restoring direct flights that have been suspended since 2019.

The Fort Worth–based airline said it intends to resume daily nonstop service between the two countries once it secures necessary government approvals and completes required security assessments with regulatory authorities.

“We have a more than 30-year history connecting Venezuelans to the U.S., and we are ready to renew that incredible relationship,” said Nat Pieper, American’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighting the airline’s deep roots in the Venezuelan market.

American Airlines first operated flights to Venezuela in 1987, and before suspending service in 2019, it was the leading U.S. airline in the country. The suspended routes included key connections that supported business, leisure and family travel between the two nations.

The planned restoration of services follows a recent policy shift by U.S. authorities to reopen Venezuelan airspace to commercial flights after several years of bans and restrictions tied to safety concerns and political tensions. Pending final approvals, American expects to work closely with federal regulators, union partners and aviation bodies to restart service, although exact route details and schedules have not yet been released.

If successful, the move would mark a significant milestone in rebuilding direct air links between North and South America and could provide new opportunities for tourism, commerce, and humanitarian travel between the United States and Venezuela after more than six years of disconnection.
