American Airlines Eyes Record 75 Million Passengers This Summer

Airlines & Airports

American Airlines is gearing up for its biggest summer ever, expecting to carry 75 million customers across 750,000 flights between May 21 and September 8 — smashing the previous record set in 2019, and doing so in the airline's centennial year.

The season kicks off with Memorial Day weekend, when American expects over 4.2 million customers across more than 40,000 flights from May 21 to 26. The busiest single day of the entire summer is July 17, with nearly 7,000 flights scheduled. At peak, the airline will see five flights — carrying close to 500 passengers — taking off every minute.

Much of the preparation has gone into improving reliability before the peak hits. At Dallas Fort Worth, American introduced a new 13-bank schedule that has already cut delays, reduced misconnections, improved baggage performance, and boosted customer satisfaction in its first month. At Philadelphia, a redesigned afternoon schedule for transatlantic departures is easing congestion and improving on-time performance. The airline also recorded the best block time performance among major US carriers in April, meaning more flights completed within their scheduled windows than any competitor.

Chicago O'Hare is another focus area, with FAA action to bring schedules in line with the airport's operational capacity expected to deliver a more reliable experience for the more than 5.2 million customers American will serve there this summer — an 11 percent increase on 2025.

New routes add further excitement to the centennial summer. Philadelphia gains new transatlantic services to Budapest and Prague, while Dallas Fort Worth launches flights to Athens and Zurich, and Miami adds a new Milan connection.

On the customer experience side, free Wi-Fi sponsored by AT&T is now available to all AAdvantage members on nearly every American flight. TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is live at 60 airports including all of American's hubs, and One Stop Security — eliminating the need to recheck bags or clear additional screening — is now active on all flights between DFW and London Heathrow.
