Airport Campaign Urges Women to Check for Breast Cancer

Airlines & Airports

Women flying through UK airports this summer are being urged to check their breasts for signs of cancer, thanks to a new awareness campaign from Manchester Airports Group (MAG) and the Greater Manchester-based BooBee Campaign.

The initiative, called “Check In & Check Yourself,” encourages travelers to use holiday moments—when they’re more relaxed and in tune with their bodies—to perform potentially life-saving self-exams.

Running across Manchester, London Stansted, and East Midlands Airports, the campaign features posters in female toilets, pop-up banners, and digital screens reminding women to be breast aware and seek medical advice if they notice anything unusual.

The campaign is inspired by real stories, including that of Kath Pryer, 61, who discovered a lump while on a Caribbean holiday. “It was the discomfort while lying on my front that made me notice it. I’m not sure I would’ve found it otherwise,” she said. After returning to the UK, Kath was diagnosed with breast cancer and has since made a full recovery.

Laura Upton, 43, from Bolton, also found a lump while on holiday. “Catching it early is so important. It could save your life,” she said.

One in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime, according to Margo Cornish MBE, BooBee co-founder. “Campaigns like this help turn everyday moments into life-saving ones,” she said.

The campaign also supports Prevent Breast Cancer, a Manchester-based charity focused on early detection and prevention.

Nikki Barraclough, CEO of Prevent Breast Cancer, said: “Holidays give women a rare chance to slow down and reconnect with themselves. We want to use that moment to empower women to be breast aware.”

Nicola Foster, Reward and Wellbeing Manager at MAG, added: “Travel offers a chance to reflect and reset. This campaign is a powerful reminder to put your health first—even on holiday.”
