Air New Zealand Temporarily Halts Auckland-Chicago Flights

Due to Trent 1000 engine supply issues, Air New Zealand pauses its non-stop Auckland-Chicago service from March 31 to October 25, 2024, offering rebooking and refund options.
Air New Zealand has announced a temporary suspension of its Auckland to Chicago non-stop service, effective from March 31 to October 25, 2024. The suspension comes in response to ongoing global challenges related to the availability of Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, which power the airline's Boeing 787 aircraft. This issue has affected airlines worldwide, necessitating adjustments to flight schedules and operations.
Leanne Geraghty, Air New Zealand's Chief Customer and Sales Officer, expressed that the decision was difficult but ultimately aimed at minimizing impact on passengers. The airline acknowledges the inconvenience this may cause, especially for those planning to travel during the April holiday period, and extends its apologies for the sudden change.
To mitigate the effects of the service pause, Air New Zealand is actively working to rebook affected customers via alternative routes through other US airports, ensuring continued connectivity to Chicago, the wider United States, and beyond. The airline maintains its commitment to offering up to 35 weekly flights to six destinations across the US and Canada, providing ample travel options despite the temporary suspension of the Chicago route.
Customers affected by this service adjustment who have booked directly with Air New Zealand will receive a new itinerary within 72 hours and are not required to take any action. Those who booked through travel agents should reach out to their agents for assistance with rebooking. Additionally, passengers have the option to request a full refund or convert their booking into credit for future travel.
Air New Zealand emphasizes that the engine availability issues do not compromise the safety of its Boeing 787 fleet operations. The airline's priority remains the safety and well-being of its customers and ensuring aircraft are maintained to the highest standards. Air New Zealand extends its gratitude to customers for their patience and understanding as it navigates these operational challenges and looks forward to resuming the Auckland-Chicago service later in the year.
