Aena, UrbanV, and Volocopter Forge Alliance to Boost Advanced Air Mobility Projects

Airlines & Airports

A groundbreaking partnership among Aena, UrbanV, and Volocopter aims to pioneer advanced air mobility (AAM) in Spain, with plans for a pilot program to explore feasibility across Aena's airport network.

Aena Partners with UrbanV and Volocopter to Propel Advanced Air Mobility in Spain

In an ambitious move to redefine urban and regional transportation, Aena has joined forces with UrbanV, a leading figure in vertiport infrastructure, and Volocopter, a pioneer in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicles, to enhance advanced air mobility (AAM) projects across Spain.

This tripartite alliance aims to kickstart a pilot program dedicated to conducting a comprehensive feasibility study for integrating AAM solutions within Aena's extensive airport network. This initiative will focus on identifying suitable vertiport locations, establishing commercial routes, and determining necessary infrastructure enhancements to ensure seamless integration with existing modes of transportation. The program also includes the potential for conducting test flights at Aena's facilities to validate operational concepts.

The partnership's immediate goal is to assess the pilot study's outcomes and explore further collaborative opportunities to expand the AAM business landscape in Spain. Aena emphasizes the strategic importance of integrating advanced air mobility into the airport business model to promote intermodality, safety, and efficient, sustainable airport operations. This initiative aims to improve passenger and cargo transport services, as well as emergency and urgent care accessibility at airports.

Highlighting the collaboration's potential, the VoloCity air taxi, an all-electric aircraft capable of vertical takeoff and landing, is among the innovative vehicles considered for deployment. This agreement mirrors a similar initiative in Italy, where ITA, Airbus, UrbanV, and Enel have committed to advancing the AAM ecosystem, marking a significant step forward in transforming urban mobility and airport connectivity.
