Carnival Cruise Line Launches Fleetwide Shoe Recycling Program With Sneaker Impact

Carnival Cruise Line Launches Fleetwide Shoe Recycling Program With Sneaker Impact

Carnival Cruise Line has launched a new shoe recycling initiative across its U.S. fleet in partnership with Miami-based Sneaker Impact, becoming the first cruise line to work with the organization.

The program collects unclaimed shoes left behind on ships, together with footwear donated by guests and crew, before sending them to Sneaker Impact’s facility in Miami for evaluation and processing.

The initiative is designed to reduce waste while extending the useful life of footwear through either reuse or material recycling.

Carnival Introduces Shoe Recycling Across U.S. Fleet

Shoes collected on board Carnival ships are transferred to Sneaker Impact, where each pair is assessed using the organization’s sorting system.

Depending on their condition, footwear is either prepared for reuse or broken down for recycling.

Shoes that remain wearable can be made available to small business owners in developing countries, where they can be resold and used to support local income generation.

Pairs that are no longer suitable for wear are processed to recover materials that can be used in other products.

Recycled Shoes Can Become Yoga Mats and Athletic Surfaces

Sneaker Impact separates materials from worn-out footwear so they can be repurposed rather than sent to landfill.

Recovered materials can be used in products including:

  • Athletic surfaces
  • Yoga mats
  • Footwear components
  • Other recycled-material products

The program therefore gives Carnival a way to address a stream of waste that might otherwise be discarded after each sailing.

More Than 500 Pairs Diverted From Landfill in One Month

Carnival said the early results suggest the initiative could have a meaningful impact once fully scaled.

In July, just five ships participating in the program diverted more than 500 pairs of shoes from landfill in a single month.

Benton Lobo, Vice President of Compliance and Environmental Operations at Carnival Cruise Line, said:

“We’re always looking for new ways to reduce waste and strengthen our sustainability efforts. In July, with just five of our ships offloading shoes, we kept more than 500 pairs out of landfills in a single month. Scaled across our full fleet, we see the potential to give new life to about 50,000 pairs of shoes. It’s proof that a small idea can add up to a real impact, both on board and in communities around the world.”

Carnival Sees Potential to Reuse or Recycle 50,000 Pairs

Carnival estimates that the initiative could eventually give a second life to around 50,000 pairs of shoes when applied across its full fleet.

The program combines waste reduction with a circular economy model, where products are kept in use for longer or converted into new materials rather than discarded.

Moe Hachem, CEO of Sneaker Impact, said:

“Sneaker Impact is honored to partner with Carnival Cruise Line, as they share our commitment to sustainability and making a positive impact. Together, we’re making it easy for guests to give their unwanted footwear a second life through reuse and responsible recycling. We’re excited to see how many pairs of shoes, and lives, we can impact together.”

Partnership Supports Carnival Corporation Sustainability Strategy

The initiative forms part of Carnival Cruise Line’s wider environmental efforts and contributes to Carnival Corporation’s sustainability strategy across its eight cruise brands.

Carnival has increasingly focused on waste reduction, recycling and resource efficiency as part of its environmental programs.

The partnership with Sneaker Impact adds footwear to the list of materials being diverted from landfill and creates a new way for both passengers and crew to take part in sustainability efforts while onboard.

Cruise Guests Can Donate Unwanted Footwear

Guests travelling on participating Carnival ships can contribute by leaving unwanted shoes for donation rather than throwing them away.

Crew members can also participate in the same system, while unclaimed footwear left behind after sailings can be redirected into the program.

The combination of guest donations, crew participation and lost-and-found items gives the initiative the potential to collect significant volumes of footwear across Carnival’s U.S. operations.

For Carnival, the program offers a relatively simple operational change with the potential to produce measurable waste reduction at fleet scale.
