Wildlife Alert Issued by NPS As Two National Park Visitors Were Wounded by Bison

News

Park rangers would want to warn guests that bison are fierce animals in their natural habitat. They can change direction in an instant and outpace people with ease.

Two tourists were hurt during encounters with wild bison at Yellowstone National Park and Theodore Roosevelt National Park, prompting the NPS to issue a safety warning.

Two women, one from Arizona and one from Minnesota, were assaulted and injured by the charging animals while visiting the natural reserves. The NPS has not updated the public on the status of either visitor as the investigations continue.

Park rangers would want to warn guests that bison are strong animals in their natural habitat, while warning that "bulls may be violent during the rutting season, mid-July through August." They can also do sharp u-turns and often outpace anyone.

Despite their seeming tameness, the Yellowstone wildlife is wild and unpredictable. While fatal encounters with bison are very unusual, tourists are advised to exercise extreme caution and not to go too close to wild animals.

When it comes to seeing animals, the National Park Service recommends doing so from the safety of your automobile. Bears and wolves should be given three hundred feet of space, while every other animal should be given at least seventy-five.

If a bison approaches a human to the point that it stops and recognises them, the Utah Division of Wildlife Services recommends backing away carefully.
