Visit Santa Through KLM’s Newly Launched Flight to Finland
KLM launches a new flight to Rovaniemi, Finland for tourists who want to pay Santa a visit.
Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland, north Finland. It is also known as the Official Home to Santa Claus. Rovaniemi is located in the Arctic Circle and about 433 miles (697 km) north of Helsinki. It attracts many tourists looking for winter fun and Christmas.
Rovaniemi flights are now offered by four airlines
KLM (December 3rd), and Air France (November 27th) were welcomed to the Finnish gateway. This comes just as Ryanair began its first flights from Dublin to Rovaniemi (October 30th), London Stansted on October 30th, and Brussels Charleroi on October 31st. EasyJet launched Bristol on November 18th, and Neos introduced Milan Malpensa on December 2nd.
Sanna Karkkainen is the Managing Director at Visit Rovaniemi. She stated, "Winter tourism in Rovaniemi or Lapland has been recovering quickly as demand grows and exceeds pre-pandemic levels."
OAG data shows that international departure seats have increased by 120% this winter to 180,000, a rise of 120% from winter 2019. Ryanair's arrival, which offers up to 9 flights per week, was crucial in expanding capacity.
Rovaniemi welcomes KLM
KLM began the 1,222-mile (1.967km) route between Amsterdam & Rovaniemi on December 3. It has only 20 departure flights this winter, with a Saturday-only and sometimes a Tuesday service. KL1213 departs Schiphol at 12:00 and arrives in Finland at 16.20 local. KL1214 departs at 17.10 and returns home at 19.15. Winter will end on March 25th.
Amsterdam-Rovaniemi's non-stop flights are not the first. OAG reports that Finnair was first to operate in 2007 and then Transavia in the winter of 2008-2010. Transavia operated again in 2013.
Two-way connectivity analysis for this week shows more than 25 cities connecting to/from the KLM Rovaniemi route above Amsterdam. There is a shorter wait time and you can fly no more than half the distance. This includes many KLM Cityhopper destinations. KLM has one 176-seat Boeing 737-800 per week, so it will be easy to meet demand.
Rovaniemi, Finland's fourth city, has non-stop Amsterdam flights this winter. It connects to Helsinki (KLM; Finnair; 2 daily), Kittila (4 weekly), and Tampere (airBaltic); up to 1 every day).
Air France is back
Paris has connected again to Rovaniemi. Air France served the route between December 2021 and March 2022. It was relaunched in November and will close on March 19th.
Air France is offering more Rovaniemi tickets for sale this December than ever before. The season runs for three weeks, with a peak of 1 per day from December 17th through January 2nd.
AF1524 leaves CDG at 10 o'clock and arrives in Finland around 14 o'clock local. AF1525 returns at 18:25. ASL offers 5 roundtrip flights in December through Air France, while Air France is very competitive head-to-head.
