Virtual Reality Initiative Tackles Sexual Harassment on Trains

Car Rental & Rail

Avanti West Coast partners with industry leaders to launch a VR experience at Crewe station, empowering passengers to recognize and address sexual harassment on the railway, enhancing safety and awareness.

In a pioneering move to address sexual harassment on public transportation, Avanti West Coast has collaborated with the Rail Delivery Group and the British Transport Police to unveil an immersive Virtual Reality (VR) experience at Crewe station. This initiative is part of a broader campaign aimed at equipping passengers with the knowledge and confidence to intervene in incidents of unwanted sexual behaviour safely.

The VR experience, which features a short film, allows participants to immerse themselves in scenarios where they can learn to identify and act against sexual harassment effectively. This event also provides a platform for passengers to engage with rail staff, understanding the correct protocols for reporting such behaviour.

This initiative is in response to a distressing statistic from a UN Women UK survey, which found that 71% of women in the UK have faced sexual harassment in public spaces. By integrating this VR experience into their safeguarding strategies, Avanti West Coast and its partners hope to significantly reduce these numbers, ensuring a safer travel environment for everyone.

Crewe station has the distinction of being the first in North West England to offer this groundbreaking VR experience. The campaign continues to gain momentum, with the Rail Delivery Group spearheading efforts to collaborate with experts and partner organizations for a wider impact.

The event also showcased the support available from Amulet Safeguarding and Security Officers, Railway Children, Samaritans, and Avanti West Coast’s Railway Chaplain. Their presence underscored the comprehensive network of assistance available to passengers, furthering Avanti West Coast's commitment to safety, evidenced by its recent Safeguarding on Rail Scheme accreditation.

Natalie Richbell-Beer, Avanti West Coast's Safeguarding and Crime Manager, emphasized the importance of the VR tool in preparing individuals to respond effectively to sexual harassment, stating, "We want everyone to feel safe when travelling on our network."

Rail Delivery Group CEO, Jacqueline Starr, highlighted the campaign's goal of fostering a secure environment through awareness and the proactive role bystanders can play. She encouraged the public to report any incidents to the British Transport Police, underscoring everyone's right to a safe travel experience.

This collaborative effort marks a significant step towards combating sexual harassment on Britain’s railways, empowering passengers with the knowledge and tools to make a difference.
