Venice announces new city entrance fee
Tourists aiming to visit Venice, Italy will have to pay a new entrance fee starting January 16th, 2023.
The tax will range from 3 to 10 euros ($3.05–$10.16), depending on the number of visitors in the city in the moment of purchase.
The fee will be valid for travellers aiming to visit the city’s historic centre, as well as the popular islands of Lido di Venezia, Pellestrina, Murano, Burano, Torcello, Sant’Erasmo, Mazzorbo, Mazzorbetto, Vignole, Sant’Andrea, La Certosa, San Servolo, San Clemente and Poveglia.
At the same time, the local officials will apply considerable fines for ticket violations, that will range from 50 to 300 euros.
Nevertheless, there will be several exceptions to the entrance fee rule, as children under 6, people with disabilities, health benefits tourists, visitors of relatives, event attendees and city homeowners will not be required to pay this tax. Also, for tourists aiming to spend the night in Venice, the entrance tax will be included in the hotel fee and will be charged via reservations or upon check-in.
According to the city’s councillor for tourism Simone Venturini, the new fee “is not a system to make cash, but to manage tourist flows”, as Venice has faced over-tourism for many years now and its residents are even fleeing the town due to extremely high living costs.
As incredible as it may seem, the entire city of Venice is currently sinking due to rising waters and the impressive weight of the total number of visiting tourists. So, the new tourism tax will translate into lower taxes for local people, while helping with the overcrowding, in the attempt to save the ancient city.
The new entrance fee will come into effect starting January 16th, 2023.
