Valencia Will Host the First Congress of the World Tourism Association for Culture and Heritage
Valencia will host the WTACH's first international congress on preservation and cultural heritage in tourist destinations.
After a meeting between Nigel Fell (General Manager of WTACH) and Sandra Gomez (Deputy Mayor), this announcement was made on the World Travel Market's first day in London.
The City of Valencia has committed to working with WTACH to host the first international conference called GS23. It will be held on September 23 and 24, 2023. This summit aims to increase awareness about the importance of protecting the unique characteristics, history, cultural assets, and values that they offer, in order to preserve and protect them for future generations.
Sandra Gómez, deputy mayor of Valencia, highlighted the fact that "for the City Council of Valencia the preservation and respect for our heritage is a priority, a commitment that must also assume those who visit us. That is why we invest great efforts to maintain the authenticity, our streets, and neighborhoods, as well as the emblematic environments of our city. In addition to regulatory measures and public initiatives aimed at taking care of heritage, public policies are geared towards making Valencia a city for people, recovering spaces for pedestrians and reducing the impact that traffic can have on historic monuments, thus becoming a more resident-friendly and sustainable city."
"Valencia is a leader in heritage preservation initiatives, so it was natural for WTACH to work with Fundación Visit Valencia to present our inaugural Global Summit,” added Nigel Fell, General Manager of WTACH.
Valencia, the first host of WTACH with a millenary legacy
Valencia is home to many UNESCO Heritage treasures such as the Lonja de la Seda building, as well the Tribunal de las Aguas and its most famous international festival, Fallas. The streets of Valencia, which include the Old Town and its emblematic neighborhoods like Cabanyal and Russafa as well as the City of Arts and Sciences are surrounded by unique buildings, museums, and sites that form part of a rich historic heritage.
The GS23 celebration will bring together representatives from government ministries, tourism boards, and private sector managers. This includes tour operators, media representatives, as well as media. This meeting place is in Valencia, a city that is transforming to become carbon neutral by 2030. Valencia has made it a priority to be a sustainable city in all aspects of its management. This effort has received important international awards, including European Smart City 2022 and World Design Capital 2022.
