US announces “first tranche” of sanctions for Russia

News

Nevertheless, the US President thinks there is still time to avoid armed conflict by using diplomatic negotiations.

“There’s no question that Russia is the aggressor, so we’re clear eyed about the challenges we’re facing.

“Nonetheless, there is still time to avert the worst case scenario that will bring untold suffering to millions of people if they move as suggested”, Joe Biden commented.

After Russia’s recent acknowledgement of Donetsk and Luhansk independence, the Federation Council in Kremlin approved deployment of military troops in order “to maintain peace” in the Ukrainian regions. The West considers this an invasion move, as Putin is expected to advance to other parts of Ukraine soon.

The new sanctions from the US target Russian finances, while other countries also aim to promptly restrict influence from Kremlin.

Germany, for example, has made the bold move of opposing the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline’s certification, which can result in huge financial loss for Russia. Britain also sanctioned five Russian banks and several billionaires in the country so far. Moreover, EU foreign ministers “unanimously agreed on an initial sanctions package”.

According to the Western officials, Vladimir Putin prepares an invasion of the Ukrainian territory, in a conflict that could have catastrophic consequences for Europe and the entire world. Putin denies war plans, but highlights the importance of Ukraine not joining NATO.

“The best solution […] would be if the current Kyiv authorities themselves refused to join NATO and maintained neutrality,” he declared.

However, Ukraine has repeatedly announced its intention of becoming a NATO member.

As for the current situation, US authorities think that 150,000 Russian troops are prepared to launch an imminent assault on Ukraine.
