UNWTO welcomes Málaga Sustainable Tourism Observatory

News

Malága has joined the World Tourism Organization’s International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories (INSTO).

Andalusia’s most popular tourism destination, with over 1.4 million overnight guests back in 2019, is at the same time the fourth preferred destination in Spain. And now, Malaga Sustainable Tourism Observatory is a part of the city’s tourism strategy for 2021-2024, while easing data collection on economic, environmental and social aspects enhancing sustainability.

UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili commented with the occasion:

“We warmly welcome the Sustainable Tourism Observatory of Málaga into our global network. The Observatory’s work will generate relevant evidence of the impacts that tourism has on the destination.

“This will facilitate the decision-making process, which leading tourism destinations around the world are using to ensure the transformation into sustainable and resilient destinations.”

The Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, added:

"It is an honour for the city to be part of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories and contribute to this strong commitment to sustainability in the sector.

“The transformation experienced in Malaga has been based on the pillars of a Smart Tourism Destination, so sustainability is and remains one of the main values to make the city an attractive destination and adapted to the new trends that a responsible tourism practice requires".

The Málaga Tourism Observatory’s creation was possible with the help of the Tourism Department of the Málaga City Council and the expert committee. The Observatory here joins the other 4 Spanish Sustainable Tourism Observatories in Barcelona, Canary Islands, Mallorca and Navarre.

INSTO was established back in 2004 in order to promote tourism industry performance, management plans, resilience and sustainability.
