UK gets hot, with steaming 40C (104F) temperatures this week
England is currently under red warning for heat, with vulnerable people at extremely high danger risk. Code red includes London, Leeds, Birmingham, Cambridge, Manchester and York, but amber warnings have also been issued for the rest of the territory, Wales and Scotland (south) included.
People have been advised not to travel unless essential, several schools have been closed and hospitals expect considerable traffic these days.
For tomorrow, weather forecasters have predicted even hotter temperatures - up to 42C possible. Nevertheless, some short showers as well as cooler air moving into the north-west of the UK are also expected.
If affected by the heatwave and want to easier overcome this period, here are some tips that will help you remain comfortable if you don’t have any air conditioning systems: keep the curtains drawn and the windows closed, use fans or ice water bottles, cool your feet with the help of chilled socks, keep hydrated, don’t go out, don’t travel unless for urgent situations.
As high temperatures can have a significant impact on health, the ambulance service is also expecting a surging number of calls during the heatwave, with more than 8.000 emergency calls a day.
The heatwave is also expected to spread across Europe, causing more wildfires and evacuations.
