Travel alert for Bali, as Mount Agung volcano is to erupt
Authorities in Indonesia have expanded the warning for locals and tourists, as Mount Agung started to erupt.
Mount Agung is situated in Bali, Indonesia, near Kuta, a popular destination for hikers. The volcano here is currently showing activity, with 50-meter high blasts at the base of its crater.
As a results, officials in Indonesia have doubled the size of the area citizens should avoid, with the National Disaster Mitigation Agency currently upgrading the alert to Level 3.
This translates into tourists and locals being advised to stay within a 6 kilometers range away from the Mount Agung’s crater. Activities such as climbing or camping in the area should be avoided until further notice, as authorities urged tourists not to elevate into the mountain at heights that exceed 950 meters.
In addition, both locals and visitors here should be prepared for the emergency evacuation procedure, in case the volcano erupts unexpectedly.
Nevertheless, the agency encourages tourists not to cancel their trips in the area, while suggesting to remain vigilant and informed on the latest updates of the officials.
The concerns are justified, as when the volcano last erupted in 1963, more than 1.100 people were killed.
