Tourism in Italy expected to face long-term difficulties

News

According to the Italian office for statistics Istat, the first eight months of 2022 have registered a 74.7% increase in overnight stays when compared to the same period last year, so the tourism in the country is currently recovering at an accelerated pace following the Covid-19 global pandemic.

However, the sector is expected to face multiple challenges in the years to come, as the it unfortunately lacks crucial standard definitions. Luciano Serra, the VP of Confturismo-Confcommercio, explained:

“The first thing to do by sitting at the table of the Strategic Plan of Tourism or – he continued – is therefore to urgently define a list at least of tourism businesses and professions that responds to the reality of the market and is shared by the Ministry and the Regions: and this must be fixed list with a national standard.”

On the other hand, Italy is one of the most popular “pleasure” destinations in the world, while its capital in Rome is one of the most attractive cities for both European and international visitors. Also, the tourism sector here has registered an increased interest for the spa and wellness holidays, accounting for an overwhelming number of tourists that visit the Italian idyllic campsites each year.

Who prefers Italy? Mainly travellers arriving from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and Denmark who usually spend at least a week per year visiting the amazing destinations here.

According to Eurostat European Office for Statistics, France is the second country reporting the most overnight stays in the EU, followed by Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Croatia, Austria, Greece, Sweden and Poland.
