Top UAE Travel Trends in 2024: Osaka, Analog Adventures, and Sleep Tourism
Planning a trip to the UAE? There are a few things that one must check on their list in 2024, and they are all worth it.
Over 50% of UAE residents plan to increase their travel budget for 2024 compared to this year, with up to 90% intending to maintain their travel frequency," says a recent Skyscanner report titled "Travel Trends: Redefining value through experience in 2024," released on Monday. The report, based on a sample of 1,000 UAE respondents surveyed in August, uncovers popular destinations, evolving travel trends, and emerging traveler profiles.
For UAE travelers, value for money plays a pivotal role, with hotel costs (16%) and flight expenses (32%) being the primary determinants of destination choices. Among respondents, 56% are preparing to allocate more to travel in the upcoming year, while 31% plan to keep their budget unchanged.
For those in search of wallet-friendly options, Skyscanner's report unveils significant airfare reductions in 2024, including Orlando, Florida (72% decrease), Male in the Maldives (58% decrease), and Rome (52% decrease). Other cities like Munich, Brussels, New York, Bangkok, Antalya, Istanbul, and Los Angeles are also experiencing price drops.
Survey results indicate that nearly half (42%) of UAE travelers prioritize the overall ambiance of a destination when selecting their holiday spot, surpassing budget considerations. The report identifies four prevailing trends driven by experiential factors: sleep retreats, destinations featured in films and TV, culinary experiences, and live music concerts.
Sleep retreats are gaining popularity among UAE travelers, with 46% expressing a desire for a good night's sleep during their holidays. Additionally, 38% of music enthusiasts are willing to travel both short and long distances to attend concerts, and 38% of those aged 25 to 34 plan to attend a gig in India next year.
The hit TV series "Emily in Paris" is serving as a major source of inspiration for UAE travelers, with 40% expressing a desire to explore Paris akin to the show's protagonist, Emily Cooper. Over a quarter of respondents are interested in experiencing Venice Beach, inspired by Barbie.
While 92% of UAE travelers claim screen-based inspiration for their trips, only 59% take the step to book their travels.
When it comes to dining, 46% of UAE travelers have visited a destination specifically to dine at a particular restaurant, while another 46% aspire to do so.
The report identifies "analogue adventurers" as an emerging traveler type for 2024. This category includes Gen Z travelers who are trading digital devices for analog techniques, with 26% bringing Polaroid cameras, 22% packing vinyl records, and 15% carrying 35mm film cameras on their trips.
Many UAE travelers are marking significant milestones during their vacations, with 72% celebrating birthdays or anniversaries during group trips. Saudi Arabia, Thailand, and Turkey are popular destinations for such celebratory gatherings.
Another traveler type, "luxe-for-less seekers," reveals that 37% of travelers are planning to upgrade to business or first-class flights, and 42% intend to purchase airport lounge access.
The report shows that Osaka, Japan, tops the list of preferred destinations for UAE travelers in 2024, with a remarkable 305% year-on-year search increase. Antalya in Turkey (273%), Tokyo (250%), Rome (154%), and Berlin (96%) also rank highly. Completing the top 10 are Amsterdam, New York, London, Athens, and Paris.
For UAE travelers, food, attractions, and weather are the three most significant factors in destination selection, with historical tours, beach visits, and local cuisine as preferred cultural activities. Other activities gaining traction in 2024 include snow sports (21%), sporting events (20%), and gallery visits (19%).
Naomi Hahn, Vice President of Strategy at Skyscanner, comments on the report's findings, stating:
"Skyscanner’s 2024 Travel Trends report highlights a growing emphasis on cultural exploration among travellers for the coming year. We're witnessing a diverse range of cultural interests in travel, from music enthusiasts embarking on journeys to see their favourite artists to budget-conscious food enthusiasts seeking the finest culinary experiences without breaking the bank.”
