Top countries to live and work in 2019

News

Moving abroad can be an exciting and most of the times even life-changing decision. But with the world at your feet, where do you choose to go? Whatever your preferences are, whether safe, cheap or simply liveable, these are our suggestions from around the world.

1. Australia

Australia always tops british people's charts looking to move abroad, but it also attracts immigrants from plenty of other countries for its great weather, chilled-out lifestyle and excellent quality of life. It’s no wonder that three of Australia’s biggest cities – Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne – are thought of as some of the world’s most liveable then.

2. Mexico

Mexico is a clear winner for both categories of people: job searchers or awesome vacation seekers. And it looks set to remain that way for some time. After all, the pull of low-cost living and warm climates (depending where you settle, of course) is hard to beat. Plus, the welcoming culture makes Mexico one of the world’s top places to raise a family.

3. Germany

Besides cheap beer and wine, schnitzel and the Autobahn, Germany's got much to offer for most dulled out people. Being smack in the middle of the continent, it's prime territory for weekend getaways. From Munich, a four-hour drive will get you to Switzerland, Austria, or Italy. A two-hour flight will take you almost anywhere in Europe. A diverse melting pot is thriving in Berlin, the fatherland's most international city, where a low cost of living meets a tech startup boom and parties galore. In gentrified neighborhoods like Prenzlauer Berg and Kreuzberg, you'll hear English quite often on the streets -- sometimes even more than German.

4. Estonia

Thanks to the ease of immigration for foreign specialists, Estonia has become one of the best countries to relocate to for skilled workers.

It's one of the best countries to move to if you're an aspiring entrepreneur or are just looking to relocate somewhere that doesn't require a visa. In Estonia you can get a work permit that can be granted within 24 hours of digitally signing a contract with an Estonian company. This is testament to Estonia’s commitment to attracting the best talent and its booming tech scene, as the country now boasts an estimated 350 start-ups, making high-tech industries account for 15% of Estonia’s Total GDP.

5. Thailand

Thailand is the most livable of tropical paradises, with a storied history of friendliness to outsiders, strong infrastructure, and incredibly low living costs. Bangkok (the capital) is a vibrant, thrumming metropolis where $600 a month will get you a furnished apartment in a high-rise complex, with a pool, sauna, and on-site gym. Good thing rents are cheap because foreigners aren't allowed to own land in Thailand (though you could buy yourself a condo).

Perks like taxis, massages, and street food come at a very cheap price. And if you can do without city comforts and embrace a simpler life, there are even better deals on island bungalows. Thailand is rather centrally located in Southeast Asia, so it’s a great hub for exploring other countries (and with the budget airline AirAsia, you can do it for cheap). No wonder so many digital nomads call it home base.

6. Iceland

Not only is Iceland having a very good "day" promotional wise, both on social media and on the news, but with it’s spectacular natural attractions and picture-perfect springs, it’s also a super peaceful place to live, according to the 2017 Global Peace Index. In fact, security risks in Iceland are considered "insignificant".

7. Canada

For those who want to immigrate to an English-speaking country, and prize comfort and safety above all else, then Canada might be the right place. Like Iceland, it also ranks as one of the most peaceful countries in the world, and, in addition, is home to three of the world’s most liveable cities: Calgary, Toronto and Vancouver.

8. Colombia

The Colombian government plans on giving out some $12 million to entrepreneurs across Colombia, in order to support them in setting up their own businesses. With the right investment, regulation and - of course – talent, the country could find itself in pole position to become Latin America’s first technology powerhouse.
