Skyscanner data shows that passengers who are flexible enough to travel on Sundays may save up to 5 percent off the overall ticket price. Since fewer people tend to fly on Sundays, it should mean shorter lines at security and less delays at your airport.

“Our research shows that Americans are willing to make sacrifices in order to save for their summer vacations, but are less likely to shop around in the way they would when doing their weekly shop or clothes.

“There’s so much money to be saved if consumers compare their travel options, so we’re building the tools for travelers to do this quickly and easily”, commented Skyscanner's expert Laura Lindsay.

Holidaymakers may save a lot of money by carefully planning their trips. Budget-conscious vacationers may save an average of 31% by scheduling their trip during the second-to-last week of the traditional summer school break, as opposed to the first week. Skyscanner discovered that 61% of Americans want to take a summer vacation, but just 30% had actually booked their trip. This research coincides with a summer that has seen a surge in the number of people travelling internationally.

Airfares to Europe and Asia in particular are likely to be the most expensive they've been in five years, and overall, foreign airfares are roughly 40 percent more expensive than they were last summer.
