The 2024 Venice Tourist Tax: Planning Your Vacation
City authorities have announced a revised rollout date for the mandate that day-trippers make reservations and pay a charge in advance.
Tourists visiting Venice for the day will soon be expected to pay a fee as the city implements a long-delayed tourist tax. The ordinance has been approved by the municipal council in an effort to reduce the negative effects of the increasing number of tourists to the popular destination.
Launching in 2024 during the spring and summer weekends, the booking system will undergo a 30-day trial period. Initial plans called for it to begin in January 2023, but logistical complications and concerns about the impact on tourism spending have apparently delayed its launch.
Visitors to the ancient city of Venice must fill out a registration form, although overnight guests are exempt from the admission cost.
Both public and private visitors are required to make reservations in advance. Registration and fees are also required for trips to other islands like Burano and Murano. Those planning to visit numerous islands, including Venice, just need to purchase one ticket.
The admission price is waived for some day visitors, while reservations are still required. Many people from the Veneto area as well as students and those in town to see friends and relatives fall into this category.
The local government has previously said that there would be no limit on the number of visitors, but that the entrance charge may be raised if a specific threshold is met on any given day.
The trial period will occur throughout the spring and summer of 2024 on various vacations and weekends. On September 12th, when the full city council convenes, final approval of the proposal is anticipated.
Where can travellers get Venice tickets online?
Travellers planning a vacation to Venice will have access to an online booking system accessible in a number of languages. After making reservations, guests will get a QR code that will serve as their admission ticket and must be shown at the gate.
Those using public transportation may be able to purchase their admission pass together with their ticket. If this option is unavailable, public transit operators will inform customers that reservations are necessary.
In order to save money, tourists are advised to purchase tickets in advance. During the test run, ticket prices will be set at €5. Travellers can expect to spend more during peak seasons. Ticket inspectors will examine everyone's tickets or exemption documentation. Turnstiles may soon be installed at municipal entry sites like the train station, according to officials.
The mayor of Venice has announced that the Piazzale Roma bus terminal and the train station will have signs and announcements reminding guests to purchase tickets in advance.
This tax is "not a mechanism for earning income," according to a statement released by the city.
Any revenue over and above operational expenses will be reinvested into city-wide public good initiatives. Some of these things include cleaning, repairing, and cutting down on expenses.
