Summer 2023 Witnesses A Surge Of 22% In Flight Reservations to Coastal Getaways
A comprehensive analysis of ForwardKeys’ air ticketing data, a travel analytics company, revealed that travellers worldwide prefer to spend their vacations on the beach.
The same source reports that while beach vacations were the most popular leisure activity during the pandemic, and the early stages of recovery from it, there is a shift underway. SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that summer flight bookings for beach destinations increased by 22 percent compared to last year.
This suggests that beach destinations will gradually become more attractive to travellers. Forwardkeys' report also shows that travellers are more confident about exploring different destinations and engaging in varied travel activities.
At the same, bookings for urban destinations have increased by 42 percent. Nature destinations also saw a significant rise in popularity, with an impressive 45 percent increase in bookings. Shopping destinations are the top-ranking destinations, with a 53 percent increase in bookings.
Bookings for summer in 2019 are very similar to those of 2019. The difference is only 13%. This shows that the travel demand is slowly returning to levels seen before the pandemic.
The US and Canada lead the recovery
A significant geographic disparity exists. The United States is the largest source market with bookings for summer outbound flights currently exceeding pre-pandemic by 11 percent.
Canada is next, with bookings up by 4% compared to 2019
Bookings for summer in the United Kingdom are only three percent lower than they were before the pandemic. This indicates a noticeable rebound in UK travel.
Bookings for summer are 11 percent behind pre-pandemic levels in the European Union.
Many people find it difficult to travel long distances due to the economic uncertainty and inflationary pressures in the EU.
Travelling within the EU is becoming more difficult due to various challenges.
A new trend is emerging, however, as Latin America has become a more promising market for travel. Bookings for summer from Latin America have fallen by 14 percent compared to the same period in 2019. This indicates a strong recovery in the region and the potential for growth.
