Smoking Prohibition in Mexico Effects Hotels, Beaches, and Other Public Places

News

Mexico's recently enacted law to control tobacco use is the most comprehensive piece of legislation of its kind in the Americas.

The government of Mexico has recently passed a new law on tobacco products control, which is the most comprehensive of its kind in the Americas. As a result of this law, it is now illegal for Mexican citizens as well as visitors from other countries to light up in any public area, including beaches, resorts, patios, balconies, terraces, amusement parks, shopping malls, public transportation, and entertainment centres, to name just a few of the locations covered by this law.

According to the regulation, eating and drinking establishments, lodging establishments, and entertainment centres are allowed to keep their designated smoking rooms; however, they are not permitted to provide any services in those areas, which must be physically separated by at least 10 metres.

Additionally, the new legislation says that it is against the law for any kind of tobacco or nicotine product to be used in lodging establishments, including both guest rooms and common spaces that are accessible to the general public or that are used jointly.

Amid its congratulations to the Mexican government for passing the Law on Tobacco Control, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) said that tobacco use is the leading avoidable cause of death worldwide, accounting for almost one million deaths annually in the Americas area when accounting for direct smokers and second-hand smoke.
