Schiphol Proposes Freezing 2026 Airline Charges to Maintain Affordability

Airlines & Airports

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport is proposing to freeze airline charges in 2026, reversing a previously planned 5% increase, in a move aimed at keeping the airport affordable for both airlines and travelers.

The proposal comes in the wake of a 41% fee increase already implemented in 2025. Recognizing the financial strain this placed on carriers, Schiphol is now engaging in consultations with airlines about scrapping the planned 2026 hike altogether.

“We understand that the 2025 charge increase has a significant impact on airlines flying to and from Schiphol,” said Robert Carsouw, Schiphol’s CFO. “At the same time, we see that Schiphol is performing well financially and that some airlines consider Schiphol to be too expensive. This requires us to find the right balance.”

The proposed freeze would be supported by a voluntary contribution from Schiphol, enabling the airport to absorb the cost increase without passing it on to airlines. This is made possible by efficiency gains and cost control, which Schiphol says have been achieved without compromising quality or safety.

While the 2025 increases were introduced to fund infrastructure improvements and promote the use of quieter aircraft, Schiphol says its strong financial performance now allows for a more moderate approach going forward.

Schiphol continues to invest in service quality, innovation, and sustainability measures, including incentives for cleaner, quieter aircraft. The current proposal is under review as part of ongoing discussions with airline partners. A formal decision on the charges is expected by the end of October.
