Resilient Travelers Defy Cost Hikes to Savor Europe's Cultural Riches

Destinations & Tourism

In Autumn 2023, long-haul travelers are eager to explore European destinations, with their enthusiasm staying strong or growing from the previous year.

As per the most recent report, the Long-Haul Travel Barometer 3/2023 by the European Travel Commission (ETC), travelers are making smart choices to enhance their experience while managing expenses effectively. They are opting for popular inter-European transportation options, including budget-friendly flights and rail passes.

There's been discovered a substantial surge in the intention of Chinese travelers to visit Europe between September and December 2023.

This surge in Chinese travelers is part of a broader trend observed by the Long-Haul Travel Barometer, which closely tracks the travel intentions of long-haul travelers in six key markets—Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Japan, and the United States, with a specific emphasis on their inclination to explore Europe.

Despite the current challenges posed by elevated travel costs and soaring airline fares, a remarkable 74 percent of Chinese respondents plan to experience a European destination between September and December 2023. This reflects a ten percent increase from the previous year and a nine percent surge compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019.

Australia and Brazil experienced a minor decline in their desire to travel to Europe when compared to the previous year. Australia saw a three percent drop, possibly due to a growing interest in exploring alternative destinations, particularly with the allure of the Southern Hemisphere's summer making local travel more appealing. Similarly, in Brazil, there was a three percent decrease, but the desire to travel persisted, with 52 percent of respondents expressing their intention to visit Europe.

Despite the impact of rising inflation, travel enthusiasm witnessed moderate growth in other countries, with the United States seeing a three percent increase and Canada a two percent increase.

Japanese respondents displayed a significant 12 percent upswing in their desire to explore Europe compared to the same period in 2022. However, Japan stands out as the most reserved among the surveyed markets, with only 25 percent of respondents expressing their intention to visit Europe in the coming months, according to the LHTB 3/2023 published on October 12 by the European Travel Commission (ETC) and Eurail BV.

Following the publication of LHTB 3/2023, ETC's President, Miguel Sanz, noted that Europe was re-establishing connections with Asian tourists after the disruptions caused by the Covid pandemic.

"Our appeal remains strong to long-haul travellers all over the world, with Europe’s timeless culture and history acting as the biggest draw. It’s particularly encouraging to see the growing popularity of rail and increased interest in slow travel among tourists. Now more than ever, it’s important that we pay special attention to the responsible development of the tourism industry,” stated Miguel Sanz, President of the European Travel Commission.

The Allure of European Travel

What captivates travelers about Europe is primarily its rich cultural and historical heritage. This sentiment is shared by tourists from five out of six surveyed markets, except for China, where travelers show a distinct preference for culinary and urban experiences.

In 2023, tourists from Japan, Canada, and the United States are increasingly inclined towards slow travel during the autumn, reflecting a seven percent rise compared to 2022.

Moreover, in 2023, six percent of respondents expressed a desire to visit European destinations renowned for their iconic landmarks, marking a shift from the previous year. Another significant factor influencing destination choice is the weather, which holds particular importance for Chinese tourists, with 39 percent taking it into account, closely followed by Australians and Brazilians at 34 percent.

Inflation Concerns & Affordable Travel

Despite the strong desire to explore Europe, inflation remains the primary concern deterring potential travelers in the six markets. This concern is especially pronounced in Brazil and Australia, with 45 percent and 40 percent of travelers, respectively, expressing reservations due to the costs associated with a European vacation. Consequently, an increasing number of travelers across all markets are prioritizing the discovery of affordable services and experiences at their chosen destinations. Specifically, 32 percent of travelers are emphasizing affordability, compared to 28 percent in the previous year.

When it comes to cost-saving strategies, the most popular approach among travelers in these markets is to reduce shopping expenses, with 34 percent of respondents favoring this method. This tactic is particularly favored by travelers in countries like Canada, Australia, and Japan. Meanwhile, 30 percent of respondents across all six markets, particularly in Brazil and China, prefer to utilize loyalty programs and opt for cost-effective all-inclusive packages.

Transportation Preferences Among Long-Haul Travelers

Low-cost flights continue to be the preferred choice for long-haul travelers, with rail travel coming in as a close second. While rail travel has traditionally been favored by Brazilian travelers, air travel has gained popularity, witnessing a remarkable 13 percent increase in the adoption of budget flights. Similarly, the Canadian market saw a nine percent uptick in the utilization of economical flights.

Australia, on the other hand, has witnessed a shift in transportation preferences. Air travel remains the primary choice, but there has been an eight percent increase in train pass usage and a two percent increase in bus travel.

In contrast, Canadian and US travelers are leaning towards rail transportation due to its cost-efficiency and reliability, despite their traditional preference for air travel. In Canada, rail travel plays a significant role, with 34 percent of surveyed respondents showing interest in purchasing a rail pass, and 32 percent favoring single train tickets.
