Picasso paintings to be exhibited at Dali museum in Florida
The exhibition named “Picasso and the Allure of the South” presents the artist’s contributions to modern art with a selection of paintings inspired by his visits in northern Spain and southeastern France.
The collection including 79 works of Pablo Picasso will be displayed at The Dalí Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, in a new exhibition set up in partnership with Paris's Musée Picasso. Most of the paintings are shown to the public in the US for the first time.
The exhibits focus on the Spanish-French mixed period in Picasso's life, as they explore the influence of Southern Europe on the artist.
Peter Tush, senior curator at the Dalí Museum, declared:
"We always associated him with Paris but apparently he was very awkward, very uncomfortable in an urban setting. He really felt most at home in these kinds of rural Mediterranean areas and that's really where his ideas seemed to thrive and change and so that's what this show brings forward."
The paintings belong to a 60 years long prolific Cubism period in Picasso’s career and are presented chronologically. The works were created between 1909 and 1972.
Picasso and the Allure of the South has four sections that visitors can enjoy, each of them connected to a specific period of the artist’s life: The Birth of Cubism, From Cubism to Realism, Corridas de Sud and Surrealism and Beyond.
Visitors of the museum can also create an AI assisted portrait by using “Your Portrait”, an artificial intelligence tech tool that converts photographs into Cubic portraits.
Museum director Hank Hine explained:
“Largely, the avant-garde of technology is put there to wow and delight and thrill. We’re using it to educate.
“We’re saying what an artist does when he looks at the world and wants to change it – wants to find a new perspective on it, wants to add more than just the visual sense to it. That’s what the AI is doing when it creates your portrait in this manner.”
The official curator of this highly praised exhibition is Dr. William Jeffett, Chief Curator at The Dali Museum.
"Picasso and the Allure of the South" will be on display at the Dali Museum until May 22. Visiting tickets must be booked in advance and can be purchased online starting $25.
