Munich Airport Welcomes One-Billionth Passenger Since Opening
Munich Airport has reached a historic milestone, welcoming its one-billionth passenger since opening in 1992 and reinforcing its position as one of Europe’s leading aviation hubs.
The milestone passenger, Amanda Walls, arrived with her family and was greeted at Terminal 2 in a ceremony attended by senior airport and airline officials, including Munich Airport CEO Jost Lammers and Lufthansa representatives. The family received vouchers for lounge access, dining and airport services to mark the occasion.
The achievement highlights more than three decades of growth for the Bavarian airport, which now serves around 100 airlines and offers connections to over 230 destinations worldwide. Officials said the milestone reflects the airport’s importance to regional development, tourism and the broader economy.
Munich Airport’s expansion has been closely linked to its partnership with Lufthansa, which has helped establish the airport as a major European hub with a strong international network. The airport has also built a reputation for high service standards and operational efficiency.
Passenger growth has continued in recent years. In 2025, Munich Airport handled 43.4 million passengers, with approximately 337,000 aircraft movements, up three percent year on year. The average seat load factor reached 80.9 percent, indicating strong demand for air travel, while cargo volumes increased by 10 percent to 340,000 tonnes, exceeding pre-crisis levels.
The airport’s development began on 17 May 1992, when operations started at its current location northeast of Munich. Although the opening was originally planned with two Lufthansa aircraft landing simultaneously, the first arrival was instead a charter flight from Izmir operated by Aero Lloyd.
Since then, Munich Airport has evolved into a key international gateway, benefiting from its central location in Europe and growing global connectivity. Today, it plays a central role in linking Bavaria to international markets and continues to expand its network and services.
Airport officials said the milestone not only reflects past success but also underlines future ambitions to continue developing Munich Airport as a high quality and sustainable aviation hub.
