Mudgee recognised as Australia's top tourist town

News

The recognition happened during Australia's Top Tourism Awards 2022 in Canberra.

According to Leianne Murphy, Mudgee Region Tourism’s acting chief executive, wining this title for the second year I a row was possible thanks to the "community spirit".

"We collaborate with over 350 local family-owned businesses and the collaborative approach that we have is absolutely a standout. [...]

"To achieve this for the second year running is absolutely a huge accolade and showcases the last three or four years of work," Murphy commented.

Moreover, the NSW wine region scored first, ahead of favourites Bendigo in Victoria and Mandurah in Western Australia, following tight competition.

"With its amazing food and wine scene and passionate local operators, Mudgee really is an authentic country town experience not to be missed," added senior director NSW Tourism Industry Council Paula Martin.

The award news synchronizes with Mudgee Wine and Food Month annual celebrations, held this year between September 2 and October 3. The event also draws plenty of tourists, so the hospitality sector in the area is back in business this time of the year.

According to Evan Hall, head of the Australian Tourism Industry Council (ATIC), Australia's Top Tourism Awards 2022 are set to highlight regional tourism opportunities, as well as other popular destinations in the country.

"The awards form part of the new Quality Tourism Framework which combines multiple tourism accreditation, business development and awards programs into a single, user-friendly online tool to develop tourism businesses of all sizes all over Australia to grow their market," commented Hall.

"Collaboration within, and across, these towns and communities is key to increasing visitation, dispersal and therefore recovery", concluded Phillipa Harrison, managing director of Tourism Australia, as Australia, just like many other nations worldwide, also faced two difficult years due to the Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.

If aiming for a unique tourist experience while visiting amazing boutique wineries, exclusive dining amenities, great shops, and attend cultural events in an astonishing natural scenery, maybe it’s time for you to travel to wonderful Mudgee, in New South Wales, Australia!
