Morocco – The Aftermath Of The Quake

Destinations & Tourism

In the wake of the recent earthquake in Morocco, travellers are left wondering about the safety of their journeys and the status of flights to the popular destination of Marrakech.

As seismic activity rattled the region, concerns have been raised regarding the potential risks associated with travel. Many of those planning trips to Morocco are seeking reassurance regarding the safety of their travel plans amidst the aftermath of the earthquake. Additionally, travellers are eager to know if flights to Marrakech have been affected and what to do concerning their near-future trips in the area.

As the powerful earthquake has struck the region, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake, numerous buildings have tragically collapsed, causing widespread chaos among residents and leaving the affected area in a state of shock and uncertainty. As rescue efforts are still underway, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant as subsequent earthquakes are expected to rattle the region in the coming days. The tremors, which are likely to be felt across the affected area, pose an additional threat to the already vulnerable infrastructure and traumatized communities.

The 6.8 magnitude earthquake ravaged Morocco, leaving over 2,800 dead and thousands injured. The epicentre of the powerful natural phenomenon was located approximately 70 km south-west of Marrakech, in the Atlas Mountains. The rugged terrain of the area has posed significant challenges for the rescue operations, hindering the swift deployment of resources to the affected areas. As a result, access here is challenging, however the area is where the majority of deaths and rescue efforts are concentrated.

The Medina of Marrakech, a revered UNESCO World Heritage Site in the ancient heart of the city, has suffered extensive damage. Historic buildings in the area were not designed to withstand earthquakes, posing a potential risk to their structural integrity.

Shakes were reported to have been felt in Spain and Portugal, causing concern among residents. However, the majority of Morocco appeared to have been spared from the impact of the seismic activity.

Agadir and Essaouira, two sought-after resort destinations, have fortunately emerged relatively unscathed with only minimal damage to their buildings. No significant damage was reported in Casablanca, Tangier, and the capital city Rabat in the northern region of the country following the earthquake.

But will tourists be safe in Morocco this fall, when tens of thousands are expected to flock there? Many travellers are questioning whether it is safe to embark on a journey to this captivating North African country in the near future. Lets see what officials have to say on the subject.

The UK Foreign Office (FCDO) has released travel advice for tourists, refraining from issuing any warnings against visiting the captivating destinations of Morocco or Marrakech. However, it has been strongly recommended by officials to heed the guidance provided by local authorities and stay updated through local media sources.

USGS predicted that the region will experience smaller aftershocks in the coming weeks, which may go undetected and unreported.

SETO Group, the representative body for 70 of France's leading travel tour operators, has confirmed that none of its clients have been affected by the recent events. In a recent statement, SETO Group assured that there have been no reported incidents or harm to any of its customers as a result of the seismic activity.

Despite the prevailing uncertainties, flights are still taking off and landing at Marrakech Airport, ensuring essential connectivity for travellers.

EasyJet and British Airways have responded to the growing demand of passengers seeking early return to London by increasing their flight capacity with larger aircraft. Both airlines made the strategic decision to accommodate the influx of travellers by offering additional seats on their flights. This move comes as a result of the rising number of individuals wishing to return home. Passengers flying with British Airlines, with travel plans before 24 September, now have the option to change their dates without incurring any additional charges.

Air France has also extended its support to customers who have flights scheduled to or from Morocco in the near future. The airline is now providing an opportunity for these passengers to modify or postpone their flights without any additional charges. This customer-centric initiative aims to accommodate the changing travel needs and uncertainties faced by customers during these times.

TUI and easyJet have declared that their schedules remain unaffected and are operating normally. Airlines urged customers to heed authorities' advice and stay updated on flight statuses prior to travel.

At the same time, some travellers are considering cancelling their holiday plans or departing Morocco ahead of schedule, while accommodation and tours may pose challenges for tourists with upcoming trips to Marrakech or the Atlas Mountains in the following weeks.

In this context, the UK Foreign Office advises visitors to check with their accommodation provider or tour operator before departing to the region affected by the recent earthquake. While the advice does not explicitly warn against visiting the area, it urges everyone to confirm arrangements due to potential disruptions or damages caused by the strong earthquake.

In light of the current circumstances, all travellers should know that cancelling any services could potentially result in a loss of funds without the possibility of a refund.
