More Than 8.1 Million International Passengers Recorded Last Month in Spain

Turespana's data revealed that Spain had more than 8,1 million international passengers during April 2023. This represents a 16.9% increase compared to 2022.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reported that such data shows that the country has received a total number of 25,262,701 passengers from abroad during the first quarter of this year. This is 34,9% more than the same period in last year.

In April, Spain experienced an increase in passengers from all major nations, with 576,6 percent of them coming from EU member states. This represents a 15.2 percentage point increase.

The flow of people from the rest the world, who accounted for 42,4%, increased by 19,2%.

Arrivals from Italy, Portugal and USA recorded the highest growth in April 2023

According to these data, the three markets with the largest growth rates in April were Portugal, Italy, and the United States. They recorded 31.9 percent, 28.8 percent, and 22.9%, respectively.

In April 2023, Spain recorded the highest number of arrivals of United Kingdom citizens (1,794,841), a 12.1% increase over the previous year.

Turespana's data shows that the Canary Islands are the most popular destination for British travellers (25,7%). 83,6% of these passengers travelled on a low-cost airline (CBC), and the United Kingdom was the leading contributor to the total, with 29,6% of the total.

The number of travelers from this country is up 36.3 percent compared to the first four month of last year.

According to other data, Germany is the second-largest country of origin of international passengers, accounting for 14.5% of the total. This number increased by 4.8% in April. A total of 44,9% of all German passengers traveled with traditional airlines. Germany was the top market for these airlines with 17.2% of the total.

In April 2023, a smaller number of French passengers, 9.4 percent, also entered Spain. This represents a 28.8 percent increase year-over-year, with Madrid (24.9%) and Catalonia (30.3%) benefiting the most.

Italy ranked third, with 83.3% of passengers travelling through CBC compared to traditional travel companies.

In April of this year, France landed 8.6 percent of all passengers to Spain, a 16.8 percent increase. Passengers from the Netherlands saw a 5.2% increase, with Community of Valencia and Catalonia as the top destinations.

Madrid recorded the highest number of arrivals in the last month, accounting for 22.3%, followed by Catalonia at 20.1% and the Balearic Islands at 15.7%.

Catalonia, Valencia, and Madrid all recorded growth of over 20 percent.

Ibiza, Valencia, and Barcelona all saw a significant increase in international passengers during April. In April, Barajas Airport added 1,811,380 passengers from abroad, followed by Barcelona Airport with 1,549,890, and Palma de Mallorca with 1,034,958.
