Innovative Rail Technology in Bavaria

Deutsche Bahn (DB) is accelerating the modernization of rail infrastructure in Bavaria, with the successful deployment of the first Digital Signal Box on the high-speed line between Nuremberg and Augsburg. Alongside the barrier-free upgrade of Donauwörth station, this development is part of DB's "Strong Rail" strategy for the Donauwörth area. The new technology represents a breakthrough in the national digitalization of railways, with a total investment of €127 million from DB, the federal government, and the state.

Enhancing Rail Performance

DB Infrastructure Board Member Berthold Huber emphasized the importance of improving infrastructure performance for customers. "The digital signal box in Donauwörth allows us to control signals online, making us leaders in Europe. This technology increases network capacity, simplifies maintenance, and enhances reliability, offering more punctual trains for passengers and freight," Huber said. He also highlighted the significance of making Donauwörth station barrier-free as a step towards a community-oriented infrastructure.

Federal Support for Digital Railways

Michael Theurer, Parliamentary State Secretary and Federal Government Commissioner for Rail Transport, highlighted the importance of the Digital Rail Germany initiative. "Digital Rail Germany is crucial for capacity and efficiency gains and strengthens European interoperability, enhancing cross-border rail travel. Germany must lead in infrastructure digitalization and achieve swift successes. The federal government has provided €75 million for the development and operation of the new signal box," Theurer stated.

Bavarian Leadership in Rail Modernization

Christian Bernreiter, Bavarian Minister for Housing, Construction, and Transport, expressed pride in Bavaria hosting Europe's most modern signal box. "This technology increases rail capacity, reliability, and safety. Combined with the barrier-free upgrade of Donauwörth station, it's a milestone not only for regional passengers but also for those traveling beyond Bavaria," Bernreiter remarked.

Advanced Control Technology

Since January, dispatchers have controlled switches and signals for the rail traffic between Mertingen and Meitingen online via fiber optic cables using standardized interfaces. This digital signal box is part of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean Trans-European Rail Corridor and replaces two older relay boxes from 1958 and 1960. Construction began in February 2019.

Barrier-Free Travel Enhancements

Donauwörth station received the "Bavaria Barrier-Free" signet, marking significant improvements in accessibility and convenience for travelers. Modernization efforts, which began in 2020, involved an investment of €52 million funded by the federal government, the Free State of Bavaria, and the city of Donauwörth. Passengers now benefit from elevators at each platform, modern passenger information systems, and an attractive pedestrian underpass. Nearby, Höchstädt an der Donau station also completed barrier-free upgrades. DB continues to make strides in accessibility, converting around 100 stations per year and ensuring over 90% of passengers can access platforms without stairs.
