Manchester Airport Will Make a $541 Million Investment in Facility

News

This money will be used for improving the passenger experience at the airport, Terminal 2 upgrades, and upgrading the airfield.

The United Kingdom's third largest airport will be undergoing the final phase in a major refurbishment. Manchester Airport will have its facilities upgraded and cutting-edge technology applied. A host of new shops and restaurants, as well as airport lounges, will be open as part of an even larger infrastructure investment.

Manchester Airports Group, which also holds London Stansted Airport (London) and East Midlands Airport (East Midlands), announced a PS440m ($541m), investment in the airport over three years. This initiative is part of the Manchester Airport Transformation Programme (PS1.3 billion, $14.8bn), which will last ten years. It was first announced in 2015. The investment will be used to upgrade the airport and to integrate new technology that can handle next-generation aircraft.

This program will oversee the completion and upgrade of Terminal 2's transformation. It will include improvements to the check-in area as well as security lanes and baggage reclaim. The construction will create over 500 jobs, and there is a possibility of an additional 16,400 jobs by 2040 because of increased economic activity due to the airport's expansion.

Major upgrades were made to Terminal 2 during the first phase of expansion. When the expanded area was opened in July 2021, the facility's size more than doubled. This new investment will cover Terminal 2's transformation. The final touches are expected to be completed by 2025.

The terminal's upgrades will mainly focus on improving passengers' experiences. A new security hall will be built and equipped with the latest security scanners. Two new teardrop check in islands will be added to the terminal. The work will increase the hold baggage capacity by more than 5,000 bags per hour. To include a wider selection of shops, food and drink outlets, the upgrades will double the area of the existing departure lounge.

A second pier, with additional boarding gates, will be built on the airfield side. It will match the design and feel of the original pier, which opened in 2019. To improve the efficiency of the airport's two-runway runway, a new dual taxiway system with flexible aircraft stands will be installed. Chris Woodroofe is the Manchester Airport's Managing Director. He expressed excitement about the final phase in the airport's transformation.

It is a great honor to announce this major investment in Manchester Airport. This is a significant milestone in the history both of our airport and of the entire region.

"By completing the transformation of Terminal 2, we will not only be offering passengers across the North an unrivalled choice of destinations, but also providing them with world class facilities and a great overall experience when they travel through Manchester.

"I cannot wait to see the plans come to fruition, for the benefit of all of our customers, colleagues and supporters."

This investment program is expected create thousands of jobs in the North of England. Over 700 people were hired by the airport last year. The airport is now preparing for what it anticipates will be a busy season in summer. There are more than 1,500 customer service, security, and hospitality jobs available at the airport this year. The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce will host a Manchester Airport Jobs Fair on February 7, which will include over 25 companies that have operations at the airport.
