London Luton Airport hangar upgrade to create 150 jobs

Airlines & Airports

London Luton Airport (LLA) is set to generate up to 150 new jobs following an £11.5 million investment to transform two former Monarch Airlines hangars into modern aircraft engineering facilities and a new airport logistics centre.

The revamped hangars—acquired by LLA in early 2024—will host a new easyJet maintenance hub and apprenticeship training campus, generating more than 30 skilled engineering roles and training up to 40 apprentices annually. A second hangar is being prepared for use by another major airline, expected to bring additional engineering positions.

In parallel, a new consolidation centre will manage all airport deliveries, improving logistics for more than 50 shops and restaurants within the terminal. This facility alone is forecast to create 30 new jobs while reducing traffic and emissions on the airport campus.

“We’re investing in people, infrastructure, and long-term growth,” said Alberto Martin, CEO of London Luton Airport. “This project reflects our commitment to inclusive economic development and sustainability.”

Boosting local employment and aviation careers

The job creation plan is part of a wider strategy by Luton Rising, the airport’s community-owned shareholder, to support economic development in the region. According to recent data, employment around LLA grew by 14% in 2023–2024, with 13,800 people working on-site—84% in full-time roles.

“This is brilliant news for our airport and community,” said Cllr Javeria Hussain, Deputy Chair of Luton Rising. “The hangars and training centre will create real opportunities for skilled careers in aviation, well beyond 2035.”

easyJet, which will occupy one of the hangars, highlighted the strategic importance of the site for supporting its expanding UK operations. The new facility will also host the airline’s first dedicated apprenticeship training centre, reinforcing its long-term investment in UK talent.

“This hangar will support our growing fleet and help launch new careers in engineering,” said Brendan McConnellogue, Director of Engineering and Maintenance at easyJet.

The announcement follows the April 2026 launch of Jet2 and Jet2holidays flights from LLA, which brought an additional 125 jobs to the region.

With over 16.7 million passengers in 2024, LLA is one of the UK’s busiest airports and a rising player in sustainable infrastructure, having recently achieved Level 4 carbon accreditation and been named European Airport of the Year by ACI EUROPE.
