Last Week to Have Your Say on Gatwick’s Northern Runway Plan Changes

London Gatwick Airport reminds the public and stakeholders that only one week remains to respond to its public consultation on a potential change to its Northern Runway plans. The consultation period ends at 11:59 PM on June 11, 2024.
Proposed Changes to the Northern Runway Plan
This marks the second notification of a proposed change to the airport’s growth plans. The key proposal includes:
- On-Airport Wastewater Treatment Works: An option to build a facility within the existing Self-Park North Terminal Car Park area. This facility would handle all wastewater flows from the airport onsite, should Thames Water be unable to do so. The facility would be enclosed to prevent odours.
How to Participate
Full details of the proposed change and instructions on how to respond are available on London Gatwick’s Northern Runway webpage. The consultation provides an opportunity for the public, landowners, and other stakeholders to share their views on the proposed changes to the Development Consent Order (DCO).
Impact and Next Steps
Feedback from this consultation will be considered before London Gatwick submits a request to amend its DCO application to the Planning Inspectorate. The Planning Inspectorate will then decide if the proposed changes can be incorporated into the application for examination.
London Gatwick’s application to use its Northern Runway routinely alongside the Main Runway was accepted for examination by the Planning Inspectorate on August 3, 2023. The examination began in February 2024 and is scheduled to conclude on August 27, 2024.
Environmental and Economic Considerations
In December 2023, the airport refined its proposal, consulting on three discrete changes aimed at further reducing environmental impact while providing additional design flexibility. The Northern Runway plan is projected to create around 14,000 new jobs and inject £1 billion annually into the region’s economy.
Encouraging Public Participation
Tim Norwood, Chief Planning Officer at London Gatwick, emphasized the importance of public feedback: “Feedback from the public and stakeholders has helped shape our Northern Runway plans following previous consultations. We have opened a public consultation on a further proposal to support our DCO application and we look forward to receiving and incorporating further feedback about our plans.”
This is a crucial moment for stakeholders and the public to voice their opinions and influence the future of London Gatwick Airport. Don’t miss the chance to contribute your views by June 11, 2024.
