Keflavik Airport in Iceland expected to be transited by 7.8 million travellers in 2023

News

Figures provided by Isavia, the country's airport operator, show that 7.8 million passengers will use Keflavik International Airport, while 2.2 million holidaymakers will visit Iceland next year.

The numbers suggest that 2023 will be the airport's third busiest year. However, in 2018, 2.3 million people visited Iceland. Also, analysts expect 500,000 extra travelers to transit the hub when compared to the pre-pandemic period. There is an anticipated 27% of passengers to be making a connection, which is on par with 2019 but lower than 2018's over 40%.

Eighty European and North American destinations, including 51 non-stop flights, will be accessible through the 24 airlines serving the airport during the course of 2023.

Nearly 2.2 million international guests are predicted to use Keflavik Airport to visit Iceland in 2023, according to passenger forecasts.

In this regard, the CEO of Isavia Sveinbjörn Indriason mentioned that "a ten percent increase in direct flight connections results in about 0.5% economic growth in the country concerned," citing data from Airports Council International in Europe (ACI Europe). This effect would be even more pronounced in Iceland, he argued, because of the country's status as an island.

He went on to say that he has a sense of personal responsibility when it comes to these matters and that he thinks a company may gain a competitive edge and long-term value by prioritizing sustainability.

Isavia's Chief Commercial and Airport Development Officer (CCDO) Gumundur Dai Rnarsson also reacted positively to the numbers, saying that the quick rise in passenger numbers and the latest predictions confirm that the tourism sector has resumed its vigor and that this motivates Isavia to proceed with the existing projects for Keflavik International Airport responsibly.

The Eastern Wing, which will be inaugurated in phases until the end of 2024, is a major milestone in his estimation. He continued by saying that beginning in late 2023, passengers can expect a new and significantly larger luggage hall as part of the airport's overall service performance, thanks to the East Wing's development.
