JAL adjusts fuel surcharge for May–June tickets
Japan Airlines and Japan Transocean Air have announced revised fuel surcharge levels for international tickets issued between May 1 and June 30, 2026.
The adjustment follows a rise in global fuel prices, with the average cost of Singapore jet fuel reaching nearly $147 per barrel during February and March. Based on standard calculations, this would typically place the surcharge in a higher pricing band.
However, due to government subsidies introduced as part of emergency measures linked to the situation in the Middle East, the airlines will apply a slightly lower surcharge level than expected. The revised charges will correspond to a reduced pricing zone for the period.
Fuel surcharges are calculated based on the average price of jet fuel over a two-month period, along with prevailing exchange rates. The updated surcharge will apply to tickets purchased in Japan for international travel during the specified timeframe.
The airline noted that the surcharge applies to both its own flights and code-share services operated with partner carriers. Final implementation remains subject to government approval.
JAL said the revision reflects ongoing volatility in fuel markets while aiming to balance operational costs with measures to ease the impact on passengers.
