Indian Nationals Obtained 40% of Ireland’s Work Permits Granted

News

The Irish Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment published statistics on the issuance of work permits for third-country citizens in the first three months of 2023.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reports that Indian nationals have received approximately 40% of the work permits granted.

From January 1st to March 31st, 7,264 work permits were issued to citizens of third countries, 2894 to Indian nationals. These permits were issued to 2,525 people in January. Nearly half of them, 1,059, were issued to Indian nationals.

Brazil had 734 permits, while the Philippines had 663 permits.

The top ten origin countries are also included:

  • China - With 321 work permits granted by its citizens
  • South Africa - 320
  • Pakistan - 292
  • Nigeria - 225
  • United States of America - Number 196
  • Zimbabwe - 156
  • Thailand - 116

This period saw 494 rejected applications, while 165 additional applications were withdrawn before any final decision was made. Indian nationals had the highest number of applications rejected (113), followed closely by Brazil (80) and the Philippines (34)

The highest number of permits was issued by sector for this period to jobs in Health & Social Work Activities (2.428) and Information & Communication Activities (1.095).

The lack of workers is most severe in these two sectors. According to the Institute of Public Health, by 2051 there will be more 65-year-olds on the island than ever before. Many of these people will require extra care.

Over 400,000 people will be over 85, and one in twenty Irish citizens will be over 85 by midcentury.

A large number of skilled workers are retiring due to ageing, and the jobs that the younger generation will not be able to fill will be taken by foreign workers.

At 4.2%, Ireland is one of the EU Member States with the lowest rates of unemployment. Ireland has a lower unemployment rate that Hungary (3.5%) and the Netherlands (3.6%).

Even if they were to enter the labour market at 4.2 percent, they wouldn't be able meet the country’s demand for workers, and in particular the skilled needs.
