In August Alone, Portugal Welcomed 3.5 Million Visitors
In August this year, Portugal emerged as a prime tourist hotspot, with the nation's lodging facilities hosting approximately 3.5 million visitors.
According to the Government Office for National Statistics of Portugal (INE), these guests collectively contributed to approximately 10.1 million overnight stays within the country during the same month. This resulted in the highest monthly revenue ever recorded, as noted by SchengenVisaInfo.com.
These visitor numbers translated into a total revenue of €878.3 million, showcasing a remarkable 10.4 percent upswing compared to August 2022. Notably, a substantial portion of this revenue, amounting to €709.8 million, was derived from accommodations.
Comparatively, in contrast to the August of 2019, the surge was even more pronounced, marking a 37.6 percent increase.
INE emphasized, “When compared with August 2019, there were more significant increases, 37.6 per cent in total revenue and 39.6 per cent in revenue from accommodation, also reflecting the increases in the prices of services provided.”
Furthermore, INE disclosed that from January to August 2023, there were 22.2 million guests and 59.1 million overnight stays, signifying a substantial rise of 14.4 percent and 11.6 percent in overnight stays, respectively, compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.
In comparison to the same timeframe in 2019, there was an 8.4 percent surge in overnight stays during the first eight months of this year, and this expansion was contributed to by both locals and non-residents.
In August 2023, national airports witnessed an impressive year-on-year increase of 13.2 percent in passenger numbers in contrast to August 2022, achieving a historical high.
Moreover, between January and August 2023, there was a notable upswing of 23.1 percent in passenger numbers compared to the identical period in 2022.
These remarkable statistics in overnight stays and passenger figures hardly come as a surprise. Portugal was previously recognized as the Europe's Leading Destination for 2023, securing this prestigious award for the second consecutive year. Portugal has also amassed a total of 22 accolades this year, celebrating its exceptional hotels, airlines, and tourist attractions, among other achievements.
