Important destinations affected by terrorism

News

Egypt, France, Turkey and Tunisia are facing significant decline in number of foreign tourists due to terror attacks. Millions of travelers are canceling their bookings following terrorist threats.

Turkey, the sixth most visited country in the world, is currently at significant risk for terrorist attacks, as more than 40 million tourists chose to spend their holiday here last year only. Following the attack on Istanbul's airport in June and last week's deadly attempted coup, tourists have begun canceling their trips to this destination, due to fear of terror relapse. According to a recent assessment by ForwardKeys, booking for Turkey have dropped by 69 per cent since the airport attack.

"The recent political events in Turkey will be catastrophic for its travel industry," Nadejda Popova, senior travel specialist at Euromonitor International explains.

France is another world's top destination, with more than 80 millions visitors every year and highest tourism revenues in Europe. Similarly, following a series of three terror attacks in the last 18 months, France is beginning to lose tourists, as visitor numbers to France have declined by 11 percent in the last five months.

Years of political unrest and aviation disasters in Egypt have triggered the crash of the visitor numbers to around 9 million in 2015, according to the United Nations' World Tourism Organization data. A further 20 per cent drop is also expected for 2016.

Tunisia, the small north African country between Algeria and Libya faced a near 20 per cent drop in international visitor arrivals, after two shocking ISIS terrorist attacks targeting tourists. 58 people died in Tunisia in 2015, taking a huge toll on the country's tourism. "People will come to Tunisia again. But right now [the country is] having a very tough time and people are losing their jobs," David Scowsill from the World Travel & Tourism Council commented, while international airline capacity to Tunisia has also been reduced by 25 per cent for this year's summer, as explained by ForwardKeys in a recent report.
