Iceland has lifted travel restrictions

News

According to official statements from the Ministry of Health and Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Island has lifter all travel restrictions related to the Covid-19 pandemics, as it will allow both vaccinated and unvaccinated travellers to enter its territory.

“No disease prevention measures will be in place at the border, regardless of whether individuals are vaccinated or unvaccinated," the announcement quotes.

Moreover, Iceland's Minister of Health, Willum Þór Þórsson, also commented:

"We can truly rejoice at this turning-point, but nonetheless I encourage people to be careful, practice personal infection prevention measures and not to interact with others if they notice symptoms."

The lifting of border restrictions are part of a "wide-spread herd immunity" strategy that the Icelandic government aims to switch to. Social gatherings and quarantine restrictions for people testing positive will also be lifted.

According to data from Reuters, Iceland is currently reporting around 2.600 new Covid-19 infections each day; at the same time "serious illness has not increased in the same manner", states the country’s chief epidemiologist.
