High Percentage of Applicants Passed the Norwegian Citizenship Test

News

Nine out of ten Norwegian citizens have passed the test. This is because a change in Norwegian law allowed residents to hold other citizenships.

SchengenVisaInfo.com reports that 6,566 of 7,216 participants passed the test.

"It is gratifying that so many take and pass the test. I know that this is an important step for many on the way to Norwegian citizenship," Marte Mjos Persen stated.

There were a lot of participants. Oslo and Rogaland were the most popular cities to take the 32-question test. If at least 24 of the answers are correct, the test is successful.

Director of the Directorate for Higher Education and Skills Sveinung Skule confirms that results from citizenship tests, which are administered by the Employment and Inclusion Ministry on a national level, remain consistent.

Statistics Norway also revealed that in 2021, 41,100 Norwegian citizens were granted citizenship - the highest number of such people in one year. As a result, 4,590, 3,559 and 3,216 naturalized citizens from these three countries were respectively granted Norwegian citizenship.

The percentage of naturalized based on the country of their origin is significantly higher among Swedes than Russians. Between 2017 and 2019, the average number of Swedes who were naturalized was 208, which is 95 percent less than 2021. The number of Russian citizens obtaining Norwegian citizenship grew from 186 to 3216 during the same time.

The number of naturalized Norwegians rose between 2018 and 2021 to 10,268. This is 75 percent more than the figure recorded in 2021 when 41,092 Norwegian citizens were granted citizenship.

These results are a result of the 2020 legal change, which allowed for more than one citizenship.

"After this change to the law on citizenship, the number of persons being granted Norwegian citizenship has grown, from a typical annual size of between ten and fifteen thousand during the preceding decade to 19,700 and 41,100 in 2020 and 2021," Statistics Norway mentiones.

Statista data also shows that 590,000.00 people were Norwegian citizens in 2022. Those with Norwegian citizenship make up 4.84 million, or 90 percent of the total population.

Norwegian citizens have seen a 50,000 increase in the number of residents, while foreigners have seen a 20,000 drop.
