Great Britain, Cape Wrath: New Remote Hostel Opens beside Military Base

News

Those who visited Cape Wrath until now know that the only way to spend the night was to stay in one of the two basic camping pods. Now there is no need for that anymore, as two residents decided to build a hostel.

If until now spending the night was a problem in Cape Wrath, thanks to the opening of a bunkhouse near the cape’s lighthouse there is now room for eight more people to spend the night.

Cape Wrath is visited by close to 6,000 tourists every year, as the place is rich in gorgeous landscape and abundant wildlife; red deer and golden eagles can easily be spotted, whilst seabird colonies have their nests on the cape’s dramatic cliffs. For nature lovers, this is a little piece of paradise.

Two residents, John Ure and daughter Angela spent £12,000 to renovate the old machine room located next to Cape Wrath Lighthouse, while it took eight months for the project to be completed. To spend the night, travelers only pay £5.

“It is a badly needed facility in the area and we plan to open all year round,” Mr. Ure said

“I will also be offering evening meals and breakfast, a grocery shop in the cafe for the walkers – as well as among the best views on the planet. So far the season has been hectic. We are getting a lot of people off the North Coast 500.”

Back in 1930s, 30 people lived in Cape Wrath and a school was built to teach ten pupils; however, the population decreased over the mid-twentieth century and it is now primarily used as a tourism attraction and for military training purposes.

To get to Cape Wrath visitors need to take a 10-minute ferry from Keoldale Pier on the Kyle of Durness, a service that depends on tides and weather conditions. From the opposite side of the kyle, tourists are transported by bus, which follows a bumpy 11-mile track to Cape Wrath.
