Fraport opens new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport
FRANKFURT – Fraport has officially opened the new Terminal 3 at Frankfurt Airport, marking the completion of the largest infrastructure project in the company’s history and a major expansion of Germany’s busiest aviation hub.
The terminal will begin regular operations on April 23, with 57 airlines relocating in four phases through June. These carriers will operate their flights from the new facility going forward, while Condor, the airport’s second-largest airline, is scheduled to move to Terminal 3 in summer 2027.
Terminal 3 has been designed as one of Europe’s most advanced airport facilities, combining modern architecture with streamlined passenger processes. The building features automated baggage drop systems, advanced security checkpoints equipped with CT scanners, and optimized layouts to reduce walking distances and improve overall passenger flow.
Passengers will also benefit from a wide range of amenities, including 64 retail outlets and restaurants, offering both international brands and local concepts. The terminal’s central marketplace and open design aim to create a more comfortable and efficient travel experience.
The new facility has an initial capacity of up to 19 million passengers annually, using Piers G, H and J. In a future second phase, capacity could be expanded to as much as 25 million passengers per year with the addition of another pier.
Construction of Terminal 3 began in 2015 and required an investment of approximately €4 billion, making it one of Europe’s largest privately funded infrastructure projects. At peak construction, around 3,000 workers were involved on site. Despite challenges such as the Covid-19 pandemic, geopolitical tensions and global supply chain disruptions, the project was completed on schedule and within budget.
The opening of Terminal 3 strengthens Frankfurt Airport’s position as a major global hub and supports long-term growth in passenger traffic and international connectivity.
