Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport Commemorates 30 Years of Spirit Airlines
Ultra-low-cost-carrier Spirit Airlines celebrated 30 years of Florida service on Monday at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
In 1993, the airline began flying to Florida. Today it serves more than 70 destinations in Florida. A few weeks back, the carrier held a competition, where winners received a trip for two including flights and accommodations to a Florida destination.
Spirit Airlines celebrated their 30th anniversary on May 22nd at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport. The carrier held a Latin themed celebration at the airport, which included a salsa group.
In 1993, the airline only offered one destination from Fort Lauderdale - Atlantic City. It has grown to be the largest airline in FLL, and it has transported millions of passengers from and to the airport. Local10 news quotes Spirit CEO Ted Christie as saying,
"We've grown significantly. We're now the seventh-largest airline in the United States. Back then we were a very small airline. We introduced a new way of flying in the United States around the mid-2000s. That really drove low fares into the market and what that's done is expanded opportunity for people who never traveled before."
In April, the carrier began celebrating its 30th anniversary in Florida by partnering with Visit Florida. Passengers were given the chance to enter an online competition for a chance at a two-night getaway, which included flights, accommodations, and other bonuses. The lucky winners were able to choose from four Florida destinations: Fort Lauderdale (FLL), Fort Myers, (RSW), Orlando, (MCO), and Tampa (TPA).
The prize is a 3-night stay in a renowned Florida resort hotel. This includes The Diplomat Beach Resort, Fort Lauderdale; Luminary Hotel, Fort Myers; Lake Buena Vista Resort Village & Spa, Orlando and Epicurean Hotel, Tampa. The trip includes a variety of experiences, including airboat tours, theatre shows, indoor skydiving and dinner cruises.
Spirit Airlines reported a loss of $112,000,000 in the first quarter 2023. Spirit Airlines reported a net loss of $112 million in the first quarter of 2023. This is an improvement over the carrier's $ 195 million loss from 2022, but the company hopes to return to profitability this year.
The carrier's revenue increased by 40% in 2022, as travel demand returned. The carrier's load factor was above 80% for the majority of its flights, which is an increase by 13% compared to last year.
Spirit Airlines welcomed another Airbus A320neo to its fleet in April. This aircraft is the first of the 26 expected to be added this year. On June 7th, the first Airbus A321neo will also enter service.
