Flights in the UK have been disrupted owing to the current cold wave

News

The heavy snow, ice, and freezing fog have caused flight delays and cancellations throughout the UK.

Scotland, Northern Ireland, most of England, and portions of Wales are all under a yellow weather alert because of the ongoing cold. As a result of many highway incidents, trains have also been delayed and motorists have been cautioned to exercise caution.

Winter weather on Sunday forced the closure of runways at both Gatwick and Stansted airports. A lot of flights were delayed or cancelled once operations restarted. Anyone taking a flight out of a UK airport is advised to contact their airline in advance to confirm their itinerary and flight status.

Sunday afternoon to midnight saw the cancellation of almost 90 flights departing from Gatwick, with at least another 37 flights being cancelled today. About a dozen flights have been cancelled out of Luton Airport. Due to the massive cancellations on Sunday night, London City Airport is also experiencing some difficulty this week as a result of planes being in incorrect locations.

Due to freezing fog, air traffic control had to limit the number of landings and take-offs per hour, forcing the cancellation of more than 50 flights at Heathrow yesterday. The airport assured everyone's safety and stated it was working hard to get all the passengers to their final destinations on time.

British Airways, the largest airline at Heathrow, issued an apology and said it would reimburse or reschedule passengers whose flights were cancelled, as well as provide food coupons and hotel stays for those who need them.

After snow fell unexpectedly on Sunday, Gatwick Airport shuttered one of its runways and resumed operations when circumstances were deemed safe. Travellers were reminded to contact their carriers, as disruption was still a problem at the terminal.

A representative from London Luton Airport said that travellers should leave additional time for their journey to the airport since aircraft delays are possible.

Several customers voiced their frustration with the airlines for failing to provide them with enough information about the flight delays. Many said that they had been stuck on aircraft because of the weather.

More than seventy flights to and from European routes are currently cancelled.

Disruption of ground transportation routes

Many cars were confronted with hazardous circumstances Sunday due to the significant snowfall.

The AA is advising drivers to take extra precautions on the roads on Monday due to the frigid temperatures. Its CEO, Edmund King, estimated a 25% increase in breakdown alerts. He also suggested that motorists make sure their gas tanks were full and that they brought along warm clothes, a fully charged cell phone, and some snacks and beverages.

Additionally, the bad weather has disrupted train service all around the nation.

Travellers on Southeastern Railways are being advised to stay home.

As of right now, it seems like there won't be any trains running between Dundee and Aberdeen, there will be significant disruption between Glasgow Central-Neilston and Kings Park stations, and service between Wrexham Central and Bidston will be suspended until further notice.

The Met Office has issued a new ice warning for the East Midlands, the whole of eastern England, the capital city of London, and the south-east of the country. It warns that Monday and Tuesday may be challenging for travel due to falling snow and consistent ice on the roads in the UK.
