Earthquake in Alaska triggers tsunami alert and possible flight cancellations

After a 7.9 magnitude earthquake hit the area, the west coast of the US and Canada prepare for a possible tsunami.

 

According to latest data from US Geological Survey (USGS), Alaskan citizens are currently warned to seek for refuge, due to a tsunami alert following one of the biggest quakes in the history of the U.S.A.

“Tsunami danger on the coast. Go to high ground or move inland. Listen to local news," the warning quotes.

For the moment, flights do not register delays or cancellations, but the situation can change anytime.

As the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) the affected areas are: British Columbia, south and south-east Alaska, the Alaskan peninsula and the Aleutian Islands.

According to the official information, Virgin Atlantic, British Airways, Delta and United Airlines have not yet canceled any of their flights.

“Widespread hazardous tsunami waves were possible,” added The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

Moreover, small tsunami waves are expected for Guam, Japan, Johnston Atoll, Mexico, Midway Island, the Northern Marianas, Russia, and Wake Island.
