Dublin Airport Confirms Dates for South Runway Works

Car Rental & Rail

Dublin Airport has confirmed the dates for essential maintenance works that will temporarily close its South Runway (10R/28L) for three days in March.

The runway will be withdrawn from service from 09:00 on Monday, March 9 until 09:00 on Thursday, March 12, allowing engineers to carry out urgent repairs to Taxiway Sierra, a key taxiway serving the runway. During the closure, all aircraft operations will be handled by the airport’s North Runway (10L/28R).

The maintenance works are required after exceptionally heavy rainfall caused surface damage on the taxiway, which handles more than 150,000 aircraft movements annually. Under European Aviation Safety Agency regulations, airports must maintain runway and taxiway surfaces to prevent irregularities and the risk of foreign object debris that could threaten aircraft safety.

A team of more than 100 personnel will carry out the repairs during the closure period. The project includes removing around 50 millimetres of the existing surface, laying new asphalt, reinstalling approximately 40 airfield ground lights, completing associated electrical work, and restoring pavement markings.

Airport management said safety remains the top priority as the airport prepares for its busiest travel period of the year. Officials also acknowledged that using the North Runway exclusively during the works may increase noise levels for some nearby communities.

The works are subject to weather conditions, and if conditions deteriorate the repairs may be rescheduled to ensure they can be completed safely and effectively.
