Discover Enchanting Spectres: New Ethereal Figures Grace the Caribbean Waters

Destinations & Tourism

In a groundbreaking development, the inaugural underwater sculpture park on a global scale has undergone substantial expansion.

Originating from the creative mind of British sculptor and ecologist Jason deCaires Taylor in 2006, the Molinere Bay Subaquatic Sculpture Park, located in Grenada, has now solidified its status as one of the Caribbean nation's premier subaquatic attractions.

This mesmerizing installation has recently undergone a significant augmentation, witnessing the incorporation of 31 novel sculptures into its underwater realm. Strategically situated within a marine protected area along the west coast of the island, the park has become a captivating testament to Grenada's rich culture and history.

Among the fresh additions to the park is the "Coral Carnival" series, inspired by Spicemas, Grenada's widely celebrated carnival. This series pays homage to iconic masqueraders such as the "Jab Jab," symbolizing freedom for Grenadians through its chained character.

Commissioned by the Grenadian Ministry of Implementation and Tourism, this ambitious project seeks to narrate Grenada's cultural narrative and historical tapestry. According to deCaires Taylor, the sculptures, based on real-life models, reflect the collaborative efforts of both local and international artists.

Constructed with high-grade stainless steel and pH-neutral marine cement, the sculptures serve a dual purpose as artificial coral reefs, fostering an exquisite habitat for marine life. Notably, this expansion marks the first instance of deCaires Taylor incorporating vibrant colors into his subaquatic creations, using natural pigments to adorn the sculptures.

Earlier this year, the exhibition made an unconventional transition from its aquatic home to Grenada's Prickly Bay Marina for a brief terrestrial showcase. This unexpected move, welcomed by the country's prime minister, Dickon Mitchell, hints at a potential shift in the artist's future works to include longer public exhibitions on dry land.

The meticulous installation process, employing a crane and divers, added a layer of complexity due to the lower crane capacity on the island. Nevertheless, Coral Carnival has been open to the public since late October, offering a unique underwater spectacle accessible to divers, snorkelers, and even those aboard glass-bottom boats, contingent on favorable visibility conditions.

Originally conceived as both a marine life conservation initiative following Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and a solution to alleviate pressure on congested underwater areas, the Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park stands as a testament to deCaires Taylor's passion for ocean conservation. Despite launching several underwater galleries globally, this park remains profoundly special to the artist, emphasizing the unique colonization and transformation of his sculptures by marine life.

As the impact of climate change becomes increasingly apparent, deCaires Taylor's focus on ocean conservation intensifies. Plans for a smaller park in Carriacou, Grenada's sister island, underscore his commitment to addressing rising sea levels and changing sea temperatures in small island nations.

While currently engrossed in projects in the UK, deCaires Taylor eagerly anticipates returning to Molinere Bay in the years to come. He looks forward to witnessing the evolution of nature's embrace of his artistry, especially the anticipated growth of filter-feeding sponges and corals on the distinct elevations of the sculptures. In this ongoing narrative of art meeting nature, the Molinere Bay Underwater Sculpture Park continues to captivate audiences and contribute to the vital conversation surrounding our oceans' fragility and resilience.
