Copenhagen Airport Hosted 8 Million Summer Passengers

Airlines & Airports

Copenhagen Airport (CPH) has recently reported a bustling summer season, marking an impressive influx of 7,956,386 travelers during the three sunny months.

Data obtained from the airport indicates that August alone witnessed a staggering 2.6 million passengers traversing its terminals.

This data reveals a remarkable uptick of 14 percent compared to the corresponding period in the previous year. Notably, the summer season has historically been the airport's busiest time, but this summer exhibited a particularly evident surge in individuals seeking to bask in the delights of a sunny Southern European getaway for their vacations, notes Chief Commercial Officer Peter Krogsgaard.

Among the Southern European hotspots, Spanish destinations led the pack, with approximately 700,000 passengers gracing their shores. Spain was followed by France, Italy, Greece, and Turkiye. Notable Spanish locales such as Malaga, Palma de Mallorca, and Barcelona enjoyed substantial popularity.

France clinched the top spot for passenger growth, boasting a remarkable year-on-year surge of 44 percent. Nearly 455,000 passengers embarked on journeys from Copenhagen to various French airports during the summer months.

Furthermore, Copenhagen Airport's statistics unveiled that charter flights represented just over five percent of the airport's total air traffic during the summer. The Greek island of Crete was the most enticing charter destination, attracting 90,000 passengers, closely trailed by Rhodes and Cyprus.

Earlier in May 2023, CPH experienced a surge in passenger traffic, hosting a total of 2.4 million travelers and setting an exceptional single-day record of 96,000 passengers.

The enthusiasm for exploration and travel extends into autumn, with October traditionally remaining a favored choice for adventurers. In anticipation of this trend, Krogsgaard predicts a continuous surge in passenger numbers compared to the previous year throughout the autumn season. Even in the early stages, the airport foresees numerous high-traffic days this autumn, potentially reaching up to 95,000 passengers per day.

In July of this year, the Clean Cities Campaign (CCC) assessment positioned Copenhagen as the foremost environmentally-conscious transport city. The analysis underscored Copenhagen's leadership in environmentally-friendly transportation infrastructure and its dedication to sustainable urban transport initiatives, emphasizing cycling, walking, and public transportation, thus solidifying its status as an exemplary city in this regard.
