China Eastern launches Vienna–Xi’an flights

China Eastern Airlines has launched its first-ever service to Austria, introducing a new direct route between Vienna Airport and the historic Chinese city of Xi’an.

 

The inaugural flight landed on April 20, marking the first nonstop connection between the Austrian capital and one of China’s most important cultural and economic centres. The service will operate year-round, three times per week, using an Airbus A330-200.

Airport officials said the new route strengthens Vienna’s position as a key hub linking Europe and Asia, particularly as demand for travel to the region continues to grow. The connection also opens new opportunities for tourism, business and cultural exchange between Austria and China.

Xi’an, known as the starting point of the ancient Silk Road, is globally recognized for landmarks such as the Terracotta Army and is an increasingly important economic and technological hub in western China.

In addition to passenger travel, the new route is expected to boost cargo capacity, supporting the movement of high-value and time-sensitive goods between Europe and Asia.

The launch was marked by official ceremonies attended by government representatives, aviation executives and business leaders, highlighting the strategic importance of the new connection.

With this addition, Vienna Airport continues to expand its long-haul network and strengthen its role as a gateway between Europe and Asia.
