Cheap train tickets soon to be available for young travellers

According to the officials, the "Franco-German train ticket for young people” will soon be available at a considerable discount. However, the exact ticket cost as well as the age range of the project’s beneficiaries are soon to be announced. The new strategy is an initiative of the Franco-German Ministerial Council, expected to make a final decision about the scheme during the next meeting scheduled for January 2023.

The French Minister of Transport Clément Beaune declared:

"Travel and exchange are at the heart of the Franco-German relationship. This is an important step in our common ambition for European construction and ecological transition.”

Moreover, as Volker Wissing, Germany’s Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Affairs explained, the discounted rail ticket move is meant to boost train travel across Europe, cut down on carbon emissions, and encourage sustainability.

"In order to achieve our climate goals for the transport sector, we have to convince even more people to travel by train. To do this, we have to make attractive offers.

"I am convinced that with such a ticket, we will strengthen both the relationship between our two countries and the climate-friendly mode of rail”, Wissing commented.

This is not the first time citizens are being encouraged to choose environment-friendly transportation, as Germany already tested a cheap train ticket for passengers affected by the rising costs of living as well as for those willing to protect the environment by choosing more sustainable transportation options. And it was also a success: the €9 per month ticket was a solution saving more than 1.8 million tonnes of carbon emissions over a period of three months, data from the German transport companies association VDV showed.

More projects will be initiated by the authorities in Germany in order to continue this ascending trend.

The “Deutschlandticket”, for example, will cost no more than €1.60 per day and will allow access on selected train and bus routes. The environment-friendly new project could become a reality as soon as the first days of the next year, the Federal Government has recently announced.
